Jay Prince – AfroPhunk ft. SiR & Joyce Wrice (Video)

December 30, 2015

By Uptown Toney

Most media outlets are either in the process dropping off a ‘Year End/Best of’ list of top projects or have already done so. Having looked at a few list, I find it crazy that many of them didn’t include Jay Prince‘s Beautiful Mercy EP. It’s truly a shame; the Soulection emcees followup to BeFor Our Time was more than solid with it’s nostalgic feel and Prince’s phenomenal content but has been heavily slept on.

Hopefully in the new year the London-based artist gets those just deserts far as the media goes but for now, Prince keeps on his P&Q’s delighting fans with a new video for his self-produced, Brasstracks co-produced record “AfroPhunk” featuring SiR and Joyce Wrice. Winding down a long day on a rooftop with some friends as the sun sets, Jay takes us through a day in the life, providing some warm weathered vibes in these cold times.

JAHKOY – Fool For You

December 28, 2015

By Uptown Toney

Sometimes in life and more often in life people will try and take you for a fool. Now depending on the situation at hand, whether you let them is entirely up to you. For Toronto’s emerging R&B talent JAHKOY, playing the fool isn’t such a bad thing.

Flipping a hot line from his Forward Thinking project single “Trading Places” and turning it into a hot song, JAHKOY puts the break on the 90’s House music and gets back into creating the deep bass pounding, slow winding lovestruck ballads that first gained our attention.

No word yet on where this will land, but streams JAHKOY’s FrancisGotHeat-produced single below as he details all the crazy things he’d do for love.

Matthew Young – For You / Low Life

December 28, 2015

By Uptown Toney

It’s been six months since the arrival of Matthew Young‘s debut Dive EP and the young crooner is ready to give the people more of his tenebrous and sensual style of R&B, dropping off a new jam titled “For You / Low Life.”

Snuggled between 90’s synth and smooth Jazzy horns, the New Zealand artist’s angelic vocals puts you in your feels. As the winter months roll on, I’m sure we’ll see more of Matthew Young seeing how his upcoming debut studio album is expected to be released in 2016 via Sony Music.

Louise Chantál – CalNeva (Video)

December 28, 2015

By Uptown Toney

Having already released two shimmering singles – “Purple Rain” & “Genuflect” – Louise Chantál‘s debut EP, Welcome to Aranbi, is set to release at the top of the new year. Keeping things in motion, the United Kingdom-native delivers a new song/visual off the project titled “CalNeva.”

The song itself “is a love letter written by a broken hearted woman, and anyone that has experienced betrayal and disappointment can relate to this story,” according to LC. “Frank Sinatra owned Cal Neva Resort & Casino. Before writing this song, I read about how Sinatra loved to entertain his friends: both which were Marilyn Monroe and The Kennedy Family… somehow in the midst of reading I created a fantasy in my head and I connected that to the emotion that I really wanted to display in this song.”

Phony Ppl – Why iii Love The Moon (Video)

December 26, 2015

By Uptown Toney

Phony Ppl‘s fourth project, Yesterday’s Tomorrow came out earlier this year and highkey went under many people’s radar. Making sure it gets its just desserts the Brooklyn based crew return with a video for their fan-favorite off the LP, “Why iii Love The Moon.”

“In our video, we wanted to open up and share our world in Brooklyn, a side of Brooklyn that’s hidden beneath what meets the eye,” Phony Ppl explained to FADER via email. “Our video combines projection art that illuminates our path as we ride our bikes through familiar landmarks, revealing the true color beneath the surface.”
