Mardi – “Living Young”

June 30, 2016

By Kaitlin

Mardi shares a new track titled “Living Young,” a remix to Da-P’s “First To Know.” The R&B and soul-infused track, laced with vocals from Tryphaena Joelle, finds the Houston native reminiscing on his younger days before the hardships of maturity. Mardi recounts run-ins with trouble, shackin up at his mom’s crib, and disappointments with women. The slowing-moving synth lines weave well with the vivid lyrical narrative, providing the perfect portrait of old throwback moments when we were all living young!

Michael Aristotle – ISLAND (prod. by Wili Hendrixs)

June 28, 2016

By Tones

Even with over three years of coverage on the AO! network, it still does not feel that Atlanta-native Michael Aristotle has scratched the surface to the true potential of his artistic being. The idea of a ‘warm up’ has been addressed numerous times, which makes “ISLAND” a perfect fit of a record to hold us off until the forthcoming Summer release of Mega Millions.

Guided by his most trusted set of production, Wili Hendrixs and Michael Aristotle combine as one to set off a track that broadens the whole idea of building an empire by staying down. Michael Aristotle always manages to impress us as a platform for his uncanny ability to provide both substance and rhythm into everything that sees the light of day. It has been an absolute pleasure to work alongside Michael with these releases, and to really understand his evolution without feeling the need to compromise our beliefs.

Aaron Sriro & Kamari Esson – This Is Something (EP)

June 26, 2016

By Tones

It’s quite the commodity to partake in a face-to-face encounter with a first-class musical act prowling the neighboring communities around you, where creative synergy often goes unnoticed amidst the eventful yet unobtrusive streets within. Florida is a complicated state in its own right, where bizarre often-unexplainable phenomena overwhelm newsfeeds of all spectrums.

Our introduction to both Aaron Sriro and Kamari Esson may not totally fit Florida’s peculiar setting, but as members of what we gather to be the Deep South, it sure is an oddity considering the vast coverage on the more northern ends of Miami, and more recent Broward sectors. The commuter lifestyle is in fact largely understated in Florida, where a twenty-minute trip can easily surpass an hour and change. As a result of this, we observe a lacking system that doesn’t do such a great job at bringing distinction to the sourcing of content and the identification of the powers behind it.

The laid-back, cruisin’ persona South Florida adopted does however mesh well with This Is Something (EP), a three-piece project led by Aaron Sriro and Kamari Esson. We feel comfortable enough calling this the true debut of both respective parties, a once rare occurrence that has now received new light thanks to next-gen acts like Lil Yachty and Burberry Perry.

We had some difficulties pinpointing exactly where Aaron’s vocalizations fit within the EP, but it is a development that will be interesting to watch in the near future. We will reserve additional judgment after the next few drops, but This Is Something (EP) is certainly worth a spin for those who have been scoping surging Florida talent as of lately.

Frank Leone – LOSER

June 26, 2016

By Tones

Just in time for the breaking of Summer, Illinois native Frank Leone serves up a sort of AO! re-introduction with the premiere of “LOSER” via Pigeons and Planes. It’s been quite some time since we caught up with Frank Leone, who crafted up such an enchanting soundscape with his debut woodland album EnterWILD. The sheer effort that Frank puts forth in perfecting his artistry is astonishing, so it should go without saying that a new record is something we welcomed in with open arms.

Even with a rather youth-driven message (first relationships always tend to crumble during Summer, eh?), the most noteworthy aspect of “LOSER” is the actual degree of live instrumentation featured within the track. As we have it here, guitarist Grant Wu (Frank’s past roommate), opera singer Madeline Whitesell (neighboring member in the community) and trumpet player Aaron Gamalinda (old schoolmate) all assist Frank Leone in the sensational telling of “LOSER”, as part of a three-piece love showcase in anticipation of Frank’s next [dark-infused] project.
