Mr. Narly – “Foreign” [Video]

November 28, 2016

By Kaitlin

After garnering over 400k listens for the buzzing single, Mr. Narly finishes off 2016 strong by debuting the appropriately tropical new video for “Foreign.”

All may not be what it seems for the Florida-born, Virginia-raised artist, who seemingly washes up alone on a stunning shoreline. Upon exploring the island, he comes across a bikini-clad beauty who supplies Narly with the necessary hydration (grapes and ice-cold water, of course) and all-too-important company.

Peep the visual, and be sure to support the track, which is now available on all major digital retailers and streaming platforms.

AO! Premiere: The SEVENth – 001 DEMOS (Mixtape)

November 22, 2016

By Uptown Toney

Fresh from touring the US and Canada on the “Be Ever Wonderful’ tour with his AGO crew member Waldo, The SEVENth returns with a new demo tape aptly titled 001 DEMOS.

The 10-track offering showcases The SEVENth’s wide range of application as both an overall producer and artist. On records like “J Train Connections,” “Baby, Keep It Real,” and “If It’s OK,” the Michigan-natives icy production and shivering synths take center focus. Whereas on joints like “Milans’s Hideout,” “Stay W U.” plus “Moon Light,” we hear the dual threat come into his own as a true emcee and rap-crooner.

The project includes additional production from Sango, Savon, and Mosaic as well as additional vocals from Marti Ragan, Waldo and Amos Rose. When speaking on 001 DEEMOS, The SEVENth said, “This collection of demos have been grabbing my attention; Most of them were created between Summer 2014 and the Fall of 2016. Some were made with midi keyboards in Fruity Loops and others with analog gear in Logic.”

Majority of the music was created in The SEVENth’s Michigan home studio including “Stay W U.,” his favorite track. “The record “Stay W U.” was my favorite to create because it was so fun. I created the content based upon thinking about stuff Sango could relate too… which is pretty much sharing art, and getting back home/where love is,” says The SEVENth. “I want folks to listen to these demos mostly to get a closer listen into my sound, how I approach my art, and for a taste of whats to come in the future.”

Stream the entire collection of demos below from The SEVENth. Look for more from him and the AGO crew in the near future.

First Play: Kemba – Negus

November 22, 2016

By Uptown Toney

During times of turmoil and civil unrest, we the people can always rely on one thing, great music that reflects the times. I know, much of the music that’s being cooked up feels like some microwaved day-old cardboard based, tomato paste flavored pizza from Little Caesars, but there are still artists that are cheffing up savory material.

Just this year alone we’ve had Chicago’s Vic Mensa drop There’s Alot Going On and Compton’s YG put out Still Brazy. Two amazing projects that reflected not only the times but their inner struggles as a black man in America. Although overlooked, another artists to release an immaculate socially relevant rap project this year is Bronx native KEMBA with Negus.

For those that aren’t hip to KEMBA, just know he’s not a newbie by any means. Rapping since he was nine years old, the emcee formally went by the name YC the Cynic. That is until recently. “I got my name [YC the Cynic] at a time when the coolest thing was to get your name from the people in your hood. So being named YC when I was a kid was cool then but as I turned 21, 22, 23, it became less and less who I am,” KEMBA tells us. “Nowadays, you don’t have to be named by someone to be authentic. It’s no like that any more.”

The name change came after KEMBA released his last project back in 2013, GNK [God, Nigga, King]. This breakthrough effort by the emcee had him as the topic of conversation when it comes to top tier New York lyricists. Three years later, KEMBA has returned to expand on his critically acclaimed LP with something of the times. In comes Negus. Named after the Ethiopian word for …read more

Joyce Wrice & Kay Franklin – Rocket Science

November 16, 2016

By Uptown Toney

We just saw Joyce Wrice kill the stage in her debut NYC headline performance and now, new music! This 2-track delight from the LA-based singer-songwriter was created alongside crooner Kay Franklin features some super groovy soul sounds from Wrice’s right-hand, producer Mndsgn.

Opening up the collaborative double-sided 7-inch Neo-Soul single is “Rocket Science.” It has a tranquil quality to it no doubt brought on by Mndsgn hazy cords and steady drums that match the two singers euphoric harmonies quite nicely. On the B-side, “Play Pretend” features more tranquil vibes but a bit more rhythmic. On this cut Joyce sings about holding back feelings for her love interest, the polar opposite approach of “Rocket Science.”

Released via Akashik Records, stream both tracks below and be sure to copp the limited edition 7″ vinyl here. Look for our interview with Joyce to drop soon!

Presston – Resolution (Mixtape)

November 16, 2016

By Uptown Toney

On the heels of our in-depth interview with Presston, the rising crooner released a 3-track tape titled Resolution. As he told us it would be, Resolution is a lot slower than Press’ two previous projects – Opening and Rising Action – and resembles his older music. He slowed down the down the tempo to create a sensual aura that’s perfect for these cool winter days ahead.

In his newest collection of sounds The Cheltenham, PA artist recruits LA based singer-songwriter Breana Marin on a “Discretion,” a personal favorite off the EP for it’s 3AM vibe. Take a listen to Resolution in its entirety below as it serves as the closing in triage of EP’s that ultimately create one solid body of work by Presston.

Freda James – Pushing You Away

November 16, 2016

By Uptown Toney

Just came across this gem of a track over on Neon Gold and fell in audio love. Now I know the ‘gem’ is an overly used term to describe an exceptional discovery but it’s sooo needed in this case. It’s extremely rare to find a singer than can just float over pulsating production like Freda James on “Pushing You Away.”

On top of Bay Area inspired retro Disco vibes crafted by producers Dave Weingarten and Noah Breakfast, Freda’s lush vocals swirl around like a hallowed paper cone collecting warm cotton candy. This is the Brooklyn singers powerful love-driven debut record but rest assure you’ll be hearing more from her soon! Wine and grind to “Pushing You Away” below.
