In an age where most of the rap music that’s being fed to the consumers is very dark, heavy and Trap inspired, it’s a blessing to come across light hearted and chill records like “M.A.A.T (Money Ain’t A Thang)” by Ikenna. As smooth as Kenya Moore whipping in the video for Jermaine Dupri & JAY-Z’s 1998 song of the same name, the Jersey-native charismatically approaches the shimmering, minimal boom-bap fueled beat by Brain Ochestra.
Acutely reminiscent of music created by a suave West Coast player by the name of Dom Kennedy, Ikenna’s “M.A.A.T” is an easy to listen to single full of crafty wordplay with an East Coast bounce that’ll make you nod you head as he tells tales of money making mission but at the end of the day, it’s always Love.Over.Everything.
“At the time I was creating it, I was experiencing a lot different shit from homies dying to losing my job to a lot of ish. NEVERTHELESS, I forgot to keep telling the story. Tho, this song is only 4 mins, it took me almost 4 months to honestly get it where I wanted and then I probably spent another 4 jus listening & enjoying the fruits of my labor. on some lowkey selfish shit & I’m sorry for that,” says explains the emcee via Tumblr.
Hit play on the record above. For more from Ikenna check his most recent project, 92N’Me.
