In an era of music where, “Who’s the best emcee?” went from JAY Z, Biggie or Nas, and transformed into Drake, J. Cole or Kendrick, we have many artists swarming to be the next up. Just in the city of Toronto alone there are many clamoring to be the Prince of the city. Aside from the obvious choices- Tory Lanez, Roy Woods, Jazz Cartier, PARTYNEXTDOOR, etc – and a few on the short-list like VNCHY.
Named as Hip Hop Canada’s “Top 5 Up and Coming” as well as Boi-1da’s “Toronto: The Majors, The Minors & The Newcomers,” the Congo-born Toronto resident made waves last year when he released his debut EP Neverland: 001A_0315, a “Dark yet polished with a hint of lyricism, but sophisticated at the same time,” as said by The Source.
For his first release of this year, VNCHY drops “Hold Me Down.” The humming bassline and Trap styled drum pattern by Bijan Amir that VNCHY float over as he details the reality of dating a rapper and being able to keep them grounded. Take a listen to the melodic and ambient record below. Look for it to live on VNCHY’s upcoming EMINENT mixtape.
